The historic City Square is set for a massive transformation as local government and private investors announce a landmark $20 million investment into the "Street Beat Digital Hub."
SOWETO — In a move that local leaders are calling the "greatest leap forward for community technology in a decade," the long-contested redevelopment of City Square has finally been greenlit. The project, which spans over 5,000 square metres, will integrate high-speed fibre connectivity, a public coding academy, and the new state-of-the-art satellite studios for KasieFM 97.1.
"This isn't just about brick and mortar," says Project Lead, Thabo Mbeki Jr. during the groundbreaking ceremony earlier today. "This is about creating a frequency for the future. We are building a space where the rhythm of the streets meets the speed of the global digital economy."
Impact on Local Talent
The hub is expected to provide jobs for over 200 local residents during the construction phase and host upwards of 500 students daily in its vocational training wings. For the music community, the hub represents a major milestone: a dedicated "Producer's Den" where emerging artists can record high-fidelity tracks for a fraction of the commercial cost.
The project is scheduled for completion by late 2025, with a tiered opening beginning in the first quarter. As the sun sets over the existing square, the glowing blueprints projected on the site fence offer a glimpse into a brighter, more connected future for the residents of the city.
